Ubud is a town on the Indonesian island of Bali in Ubud District, located amongst rice paddies and steep ravines in the central foothills of the Gianyar regency. One of Bali's major arts and culture centres, it has developed a large tourism industry. Ubud has a population of about 8,000 people, but it is becoming difficult to distinguish the town itself from the villages that surround it. 8th century legend tells of a Javanese priest, Rsi Markendya, who meditated at the confluence of two rivers (an auspicious site for Hindus) at the Ubud locality of Campuan. Here he founded the Gunung Lebah Temple on the valley floor, the site of which remains a pilgrim destination. The town was originally important as a source of medicinal herbs and plants; Ubud gets its name from the Balinese word uba...

The Puri Lukisan Museum is the oldest art museum in Bali which specialize in modern traditional Balinese paintings and wood carvings. The museum is located in Ubud, Bali, Indonesia. It is home to the finest collection of modern traditional Balinese painting and wood carving on the island, spanning from the pre-Independence war (19301945) to the post-Independence war (1945 – present) era. The collection includes important examples of all of the artistic styles in Bali including the Sanur, Batuan, Ubud, Young Artist and Keliki schools. Highlights of the Collection: Ida Bagus Nyana (1912–1985) was a talented wood sculptor and a gifted dancer. He is known for his impressionistic, elongated woodcarvings whose fluid shapes, devoid of excessive detail, often appear as if they had been pulled from taffy. His sculpture of the Goddess Pertiwi (Mother Earth), with its spidery legs and coiled serpant, is dreamlike and surrealistic. Nyana's son, Ida Bagus Tilem, was also a talented woodcarver. Both father and son were known for their ability to impart life to inanimate wood, thereby transforming it into magnificent forms with a sense of movement and full use of all the dimensions. Ida Bagus Gelgel (19001937) grew up in Kamasan, far away from direct western influence, but his works evolved beyond the conventions of the Wayang tradition. He was so creative, that in 1937 one of his paintings won a silver medal at the International Colonial Art Exhibition in Paris. One of his works, the Priest Dharmaswami, painted in 1935 using naturals dyes on paper, is one of the masterpieces of the Museum Puri Lukisan. It tells the story of a Priest who rescued a monkey, a snake and a tiger from a well. When the priest was arrested by a prince on false charges, the animals came to his rescue. The paintings shows these animals bringing gifts as a gratitude for saving their lives. I Gusti Nyoman Lempad (~1862–1978) A true master and "Renaissance Man", Lempad is a figure in the Balinese community as well as in artistic circles abroad. His fame extends not only beyond geographical borders but also beyond the ordinary borders of craftsmanship and artistic expression. Lempad’s specialty was classical scenes, rendered in a relatively formal way. To these he applied creative genius, and the passionate intensity of his personality, in creating works that inspired many artists who followed him. Although he maintained closed friendships with the foreign artists who lived in Bali, including Bonnet and Spies, Lempad never compromised his distinctive identity as a Balinese artist. Lempad had a broad range of talents in many art forms: including painting, sculpture and architecture. He designed some of the palaces and temples in and around Ubud, including parts of the Puri Lukisan Museum. He also painted the murals at the entrance of the North building of the museum. Lempad's drawing, the Dream of Dharmawangsa, is one of the masterpieces of the museum and is rendered in his unique linear style. The Raja dressed in traditional white cremation garments, wore magnificent jewelry, and was armed with a ceremonial kris. The other people in the procession consisted of the Raja's officials, guards, priests, wives, children and retainers, all of whom were similarly attired. When the procession was a hundred paces from the Dutch force, they halted and the Raji stepped down from the palanquin and signaled a priest who plunged his dagger into the Raja's breast. The rest of the procession began killing themselves and others. A 'stray gunshot' and an 'attack by lance and spear' prompted the Dutch to open fire with rifles and artillery. Women mockingly threw jewelry and gold coins at the troops. As more people emerged from the palace, the mounds of corpses rose higher and higher. Approximately 1,000 Balinese died.[2] The soldiers stripped the corpses of the valuables and sacked the ruins of the burned palace. WIKIPEDIA Bali museum: Denpasar The Bali museum in Denpasar was built in 1931 and it is unique collection of buildings and art. Designed by architect P.J. Moojen, the exterior walls, courtyards and gates, are designed in the style of a Denpasar royal palace. •There are gedung (pavilions) on the site represnting the different regencies in Bali. These are built in the styele of that particular regency. Among the highlights at the Bali Museum are: •A carved stone main entrance. •A ceremonial kori agung (stone capped gate) which is made from bricks (no cement) and volcanic stone reliefs. •The elegant carved, gilded, palace doors, are from the 19th century. Stone sculptures from the 16th and 19th Centuries, line the veranda of the main pavilion. Ritual masks, musical instruments and puppets from the 19th century are on display. in the pavillion at the far left side of the museum. •Bronze cannons from the 17th century, that were originally made for a prince, complete with a dragons head. •The bale structure inside the left side of museum is decorated with stone motifs. •The pavillion to the right side of the museum contains a collection of prasati (bronze age plaques) that sing the praises of a 10th century king. •When you enter through the main entrance you will see to your left a multi-towered kulkul (bell tower with slit log drum). •In the center pavillion are textiles made in the Bali Aga villages, including the geringsing, double ikat from Tenganan.

In this video we took a walk around the popular Ubud Art Market. This market is a common tourist attraction due to it’s central location and lively atmosphere. We spent time browsing through the local handicrafts available and took a look at some of the artwork available for sale. Sellers and artists from all around Ubud and the neighboring villages come to sell their handmade artwork, clothing, and souvenirs. The Ubud Art Market is a colorful way to spend an afternoon. In the early morning hours the Ubud Art market serves as a place for local farmers to sell locally grown fruits and vegetables. In the early mornings around 5am up until 7am, the market is quite different than the one depicted in this video. Locals come here to sell their produce and hawker stalls selling breakfast also set up booth all along the edges of the market. Around 8am, the market is transformed into a tourist attraction in which you can find souvenirs and handicrafts. I recommend coming here in the early hours if you´d like to get a glimpse into local Balinese life. Many cooking schools also take a morning trip here to purchase ingredients beforehand. After browsing around for a while we decided to stop into a local house for a break and sat next to some beautiful Balinese Hindu religious artwork representing demons and other mythical beasts. This place was amazing and we had a wonderful time drinking iced tea and looking at the various statues and masks decorating the hotel. Ubud homes are designed to cater to multiple generations living in one central compound. The Balinese home we visited was converted into into individual apartments and turned into a homestay. Right next to the homestay was an ancient temple which was incredible to look at through the secured gate. Although no tourists were allowed entry (As it is only available for locals to pray at) we were able to peek through the gate and see most of the temple. We could also see the majority of the temple from our seats as we sipped on our iced tea and basked in the Balinese environment. After spending some time at the homestay we then continued on our walk down the street through the rest of the Ubud Art market. It was really exciting watching the locals make their offerings at the shrines scattered around. Their offerings are very colorful and are usually made in little handmade baskets woven out of coconut tree leaves and are lined with a banana leaf insert. They are then filled with flowers, coffee, and incense. You will see these offerings practically wherever you go in town. They are literally everywhere! At the Ubud Art market, you can find anything from hand woven purses and sarongs to paintings and wind chimes. I recommend If you are looking for a way to spend an hour or two that isn’t too far from the center of town then I recommend coming to the market. It is a family friendly excursion that has something to offer for people of all ages. Ubud Art Market Directions The market is conveniently located in central Ubud. It is right across the street from the historic Ubud Palace to the south. Street Address: Jl. Raya Ubud No.35, Ubud, Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia 80571 Hours of Operation: The market is open everyday of the week from 6AM - 4PM Music Credits: https://soundcloud.com/lakeyinspired Feeling Good by Lakely Inspired (Soundcloud) Feels like Home by Lakely Inspired (Soundcloud) Good Morning by Lakely Inspired (Soundcloud) Kye Kye by Doug Maxwell/Jimmy Fontanez (Youtube Audio Library) Sunday by Otis McDonald (Youtube Audio Library) Vespers by Topher Mohr and Alex Elena (Youtube Audio Library) Bali Bali by Doug Maxwell/Jimmy Fontanez (Youtube Audio Library) Scarlet Fire (Sting) by Otis McDonald (Youtube Audio Library) Indonesian Singer / Songwriter plays into the Nature by Dave Gardener (Soundcloud) https://soundcloud.com/dave-gardener Ticker by Silent Partner (Youtube Audio Library) Invisible by Vibe Tracks (Youtube Audio Library)

This art gallery-cum-museum is a few kms from downtown Ubud and, therefore, less visited. But it's just as interesting as the others, as well as tranquil and welcoming. While the gallery is free to wander around, the museum charges foreigners about US$10 to enter.

Museum Rudana was built under the idealism of Nyoman Rudana, as the founder who consider that art is universal, therefore, it contributes to the harmonious process between men and God ( parahyangan ), men and their fellow human beings ( pawongan ), and men with nature ( palemahan ) , reflected in the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which art has a great contribution in spreading world peace, prosperity and brotherhood amongst mankind. Humanism concept of Rudana Art Museum, there is for the benefit of human beings, is my main philosophy in collecting paintings and other art objects that are now can be enjoyed at the museum. Its blessing ceremony was held on 11 August 1995 as part of the commemoration of the 50th Indonesian Independence with its Golden Indonesian Spirit. President Soeharto officially opened it on 26 December 1995. www.museumrudana.com. www.adonisrama.wordpress.com

The town was originally important as a source of medicinal herbs and plants; Ubud gets its name from the Balinese word ubad (medicine). In the late nineteenth century, Ubud became the seat of feudal lords who owed their allegiance to the king of Gianyar, at one time the most powerful of Bali's southern states. The lords were members of the satriya family of Sukawati, and were significant supporters of the village's increasingly renowned arts scene. Tourism on the island developed after the arrival of Walter Spies, an ethnic German born in Russia who taught painting and music, and dabbled in dance. Spies and foreign painters Willem Hofker and Rudolf Bonnet entertained celebrities including Charlie Chaplin, Noel Coward, Barbara Hutton, H.G. Wells and Vicki Baum. They brought in some of the greatest artists from all over Bali to teach and train the Balinese in arts, helping Ubud become the cultural centre of Bali. A new burst of creative energy came in 1960s in the wake of Dutch painter Arie Smit (1916-), and development of the Young Artists Movement. There are many museums in Ubud, including the Museum Puri Lukisan and the Agung Rai Museum of Art. The Bali tourist boom since the late 1960s has seen much development in the town; however, it remains a centre of artistic pursuit. Ubud tourism focuses on culture, yoga and nature. In contrast to the main tourist area in southern Bali, the Ubud area has forests, rivers, cooler temperatures and less congestion although traffic has increased dramatically in the 21st century. A number of smaller "boutique"-style hotels are located in and around Ubud, which commonly offer spa treatments or treks up Ubud's mountains.

Denpasar is the largest city and capital of the island of Bali, Indonesia. It is located in South Bali. Denpasar is a bustling, multi-cultural city and although it can seem a little intimidating the first time you visit, just do not believe those travel guides which say it has nothing to offer. Denpasar is bristling with temples, palaces and museums and its occupants are outstandingly friendly. You will be off the beaten tourist track here, so bring lots of time for a chat with the locals and a decent map of town. You can see many of the main sights comfortably on foot. This is also a notable shopping city with options to please even the most jaded of world shoppers. Denpasar is the seat of government in Bali and is therefore home to the provincial governor's office as well as the administration of the Regency of Badung. Denpasar is the main gateway to Bali and the city is also a hub for other cities in the Lesser Sunda Islands. Bali has various attractions. The white sandy beaches are well-known all over the island. The surfing beach is Serangan Island. Sanur beach has calmer waters and is excellent for sunbathing and kitesurfing. Ten minutes from the Airport lies the town of Kuta. Kuta is where most of the hotels, restaurants, malls, cafes, marketplaces, and spas that cater to tourists are located. In the Denpasar area, all kinds of Balinese handicrafts are represented in local shops. These include artwork, pottery, textiles, and silver. Batik cloth is sold all over Denpasar. While arts and culture in the city of Denpasar largely synonymous with art and culture in general, although here there has been a mix of interaction with other cultures along with the arrival of tourists from all walks of life.
